On Saturday 15 July 2023, Shree Swaminarayan Mandir was the host to Pop-Up Brent Repairs Cafe and Kingsbury Environmental Network Meeting; both events aimed at actively tackling climate change and making a positive difference to the environment.
Pop-Up Brent Repairs Cafe, a fairly recent initiative launched by London Borough of Brent, helps to connect residents with local organisations and businesses who champion repair, reuse and upcycling, in order to help us achieve our shared endeavours to live more sustainably.
The Mandir's state of the art multifunction hall, Purushottam Mahal, saw many from the local community attend the Pop-Up Repairs Cafe which helped in upcycling old clothing and accessories to fixing broken clothes and bicycles.
The second event, Kingsbury Environmental Network Meeting was an open invitation to local residents who are interested in taking climate action and building links with other residents, community and faith groups in the area. Members from the Mandir itself, wider community along with local councillors attended to partake in the discussions.
It was apt for the Mandir to host both events. With Ved Ratna Acharaya Swamishree Maharaj's vision and inspiration, Kingsbury Mandir has been given the prestigious accolade as the world’s first ‘Eco-Temple’ for its environmentally friendly green credentials making it an award winning, much lauded and widely admired Hindu Temple. Through the inspiration of Acharya Shree Jitendriyapriyadasji Maharaj, the Mandir community remain dedicated to reducing waste, recycling and reusing to help combat climate change.
Acharya Shree Jitendriyapriyadasji Swamiji Maharaj is the current spiritual leader of Maninagar Shree Swaminarayan Gadi Sansthan. He is the heir to Acharya Shree Purushottampriyadasji Swamishree Maharaj, and sixth in the lineage of ascetic Acharyas, which descends directly from Lord Shree Swaminarayan.
