As a prelude to the Festival of Mind, Body and Soul, the British Organ Donation Society (BODY) accepted an invitation from His Holiness Acharya Swamishree Purushottampriya Maharaj, the President of Shree Swaminarayan Gadi Sansthan, to attend a special assembly on 15th July 2000.

A gathering of 1,500 people from all over London including Hendon, Harrow, Kenton, Golders Green and the temple in Golders Green heard Mr. John Evans givea speech on the urgent need for organs to save lives.

Mr. Evans stated that this was the first time in fifteen years of the existence of his organisation that such a special assembly of willing donors had been called.

His Holiness then spoke of the importance of organ donation and stated that this was the ultimate act of charity towards one’s fellow men.

To dispel misunderstanding amongst Hindus on this issue, His Holiness quoted examples of Rishis and Maharishis from Hindu scriptures, giving their bodies to save lives and this served as inspiration to us all to follow suit.

Lord Swaminarayan, whose followers believe in the incarnation of god, also advocated benevolence of this type of charity.

His Holiness endorsed the various schemes of heart, liver and kidney donation put forward by Mr. Evans and asked the assembly to give generously of themselves so that others may live.

Over 700 registration cards and application forms were handed out to community members keen to partake in mind, body and spirit and this true act of charity.

Mr. Evans will return to the temple on 24th August to collect the forms.
